Early Recordings (Pre-September 2002)

ProgcraftGame: StarCraft
Composer: Glenn Stafford
Completed: August 2007

Download (5:26, 7.53mB)

Comments: The theme for DoD was PC games, so being a huge fan and regular player of StarCraft, I couldn't resist the opportunity to arrange a song from the soundtrack. I enlisted fellow musicians Zoast, who did the trumpets and acoustic guitar, and pingosimon, who did the bass and violin section. The rest is me, but the drums are sequenced.

Winter MadnessGame: Secret of Mana
Composer: Hiroki Kikuta
Completed: May 2007

Download (5:09, 6.78mB)

Comments: I did this for the May '07 DoD Fire vs. Ice month, as a collaboration with my good friend, Zoast. He did the drums, among a few other tracks, all of which just turned out great. The arrangement is of two songs from Secret of Mana -- "Eight Ringing Bells" and "A Wish", both songs from ice areas in the game.

The arrangment itself is pretty laid back, and you won't find much in the heavy metal department. I chose the title for this in tribute to one of my all time favorite instrumental songs by Kool and the Gang: Summer Madness. I feel this is one of my greatest accomplishments to date and I hope you'll check it out!

Battle 2 Game: Lufia II
Composer: Yasunori Shiono
Completed: March 2007

Download (1:14, 1.10mB)

Comments: This was done as a birthday song for SnappleMan at his request. I submitted it as an alternate to the DoD March free month. This is as far as I got with it and I'm calling it finished.

Asteroid Blaster Game: Cybernator
Composer: Opus Corp.
Completed: February 2007

Download (2:19, 3.15mB)

Comments: I did this for the 4th round of Akumu's competition, Street Musician.

Crossin' Time Game: Chrono Trigger
Composer: Yasunori Mitsuda, Nobuo Uematsu, Noriko Matsueda
Completed: January 2007

Download (11:15, 10.8mB)

Comments: This is the start of something I wanted to be much bigger. As it is, it consists of 7 songs arranged in a medley. My intent was to make a Chrono Trigger medley that sort of told a story as you listened. As I made this during a time when I was really trying to improve my mixing abilities, that's where much of the time I spent on this went to.

Anyway, as for the song...it starts out with Morning Sunlight. On the next song, Peaceful Days, this is perhaps the first acoustic guitar I've recorded. In total, I used about 24 different instruments in the song. The section at 10:05 was inspired by Kool and the Gang.

Not much else to say about this. The sound effect that plays before the Battle with Magus is the torches that light up in the original game before you fight him. I've included a list of the songs at their times below:

0:06 - Morning Sunlight
1:07 - Peaceful Days
3:45 - Brink of Time
4:53 - Manoria Cathedral
5:59 - Magus' Castle
6:31 - Battle with Magus
8:40 - Secret of the Forest

VillageGame: Sorcerian
Composer: Falcom Sound Team JDK, Hiroshi Kubota (????), Tokuhiko Uwabo (????)
Completed: November 2006

Download (2:29, 2.13mB)

Comments: This is a short cover of the Village theme from the Genesis version of Sorcerian. It was submitted for the November DoD free month.

Let's Kick Shell! Game: TMNT: Turtles in Time (aka The Hyperstone Heist)
Composer: Masahiro Ikariko
Completed: October 2006

Download (3:45, 3.77mB)

Comments: I did this for the Sega month theme in DoD. It's a medley of the songs: The Gauntlet, Sewer Surfin, and Star Base. Not much to say about this one. I used my DSL401 amp for all of the guitars. Also note that I stole the song title from SnappleMan without even knowing it :)

Dawn of the Desert Game: Sorcerian
Composer: Yuzo Koshiro, Mieko Ishikawa, Hideaki Nagata, Reiko Takebayashi
Completed: Work-In-Progress (DoD release: August 2006)

Download (2:19, 2.84mB)

Comments: This is the first part of what is supposed to be a Sorcerian medley (PC version). If you haven't checked this soundtrack out, grab it somewhere. It's great. This arrangement is of the "Cursed Oasis".

And trust me when I say it's still very rough. I had to resort to using Guitar Rig 2 for my tracks because I couldn't get the time for recording my amp (the rhythm guitars suck!). And yes, sorry for how short it is...It's all I had been able to accomplish for DoD in time.

Lunaric Sonority Game: Final Fantasy IV
Composer: Nobuo Uematsu
Completed: May 2006

Download (7:35, 7.75mB)

Comments: I had been planning this arrangement for several months, starting out in Sept 2005 when I was jamming keydrums to "The Lunarians" from FF4. I was getting some cool grooves out of it, and I just envisioned this whole 5/4 arrangement with really heavy guitars. This is my first arrangement featuring my new JCM2000 DSL401 amp. Recorded up in norg's studio in Seattle.

Rose of Solemn Game: Secret of Mana
Composer: Hiroki Kikuta
Completed: October 2005

Download (8:24, 8.27mB)

Comments: This is one of my best arrangements, I believe. I'm glad with how it turned out, with the exception of the poorly mixed distorted guitars in the later heavy section. This song needed an epic feeling, since it's such a great melody and only a little over a minute long. I wanted something really synthy and ambient but still rockin'. Hope you enjoy.

Mute CityGame: F-Zero
Composer: Yumiko Kanki, Naoto Ishida
Completed: August 2005

Download (2:41, 2.73mB)

Comments: Meh. I just tossed this together at the very last minute for August's DoD. Here's what I said in the DoD thread:

"Yeah, I apologize about the quality of my entry. Last Thursday, I
didn't have anything to do before up to Seattle for PAX, so I wanted to
challenge myself to see if I could make an entry before we had to go. I
finished it in a little over 3 hours from scratch. The drums on there
are real time key drumming without any quantization. I'm going to make
it a goal to try and enter every month now, since I have been in every
month since May."

Just download this for fun. It's basically a straight cover. I wanted a challenge to see how fast I could make this from scratch. Thanks to SnappleMan for the uber soundfonted bass :-P

Sonic Depths Game: Super Mario 64
Composer: Koji Kondo
Completed: July 2005

Download (4:27, 6.2mB)

Comments: An entry for the July 2005 Dwelling of Duels "Super Mario Brothers" Theme.

The Story:

This arrangement of Dire Dire Docks was sort of an accident. Ashane, Crimson, and norg were tampering around with Skype one night discussing the July month and the fact that nobody planned on entering anything. Oddly enough, Ashane and norg were both jamming away at Dire Dire Docks on separate instruments at the same time for no apparent reason. The end result? A collaboration to rock the docks, so to speak. We place blame for this song, in its entirity, solely on the shoulders of our lost brother Crimson.

Ashane did electric lead and rhythm guitars, as well as keeping norg from getting lazy in the mixing process.
norg did other stuff.

This is an updated version from the DoD release. There are a couple of updated drum fills, the mix is slightly updated, instruments get their day in the sun, norg fixed his acoustic guitar part to be more accurate, and overall this version is sonically superior to that of the original entry.

We hope you enjoy listening to this piece as much as we enjoyed making it.

- Ashane & norg

Blow Me Game: Bubble Bobble
Composer: ?
Completed: July 2005

Download (0:49, 981kB)

Comments: This was a quicky acappella cover I did of the Bubble Bobble theme for the DoD joke tune month. Finished it in like 2 hours, just before the DoD deadline. Pitch shifters rule.

Cessation of Mammon Game: Chrono Trigger
Composer: Yasunori Mitsuda
Completed: Work-In-Progress (DoD release: June 2005)

Download (8:50, 9.69mB)

Comments: This is an arrangement of Schala's theme from Chrono Trigger, in the style of Zealous Entropy. I had that arrangement in mind a lot when I was writing the arrangement for this piece. This is also is a vocal arrangement, done by the stellar LuIzA. It's not done yet...Needs a few touch-ups and a redone solo.

Madara Movement 1 Game: Mouryou Senki Madara
Composer: Konami Kukeiha Club
Completed: Work-In-Progress? (DoD release: May 2005)

Download (6:25, 9.69mB)

Comments: This is an arrangement I did in collaboration with my brother, housethegrate, for the May DoD, Konami month. We divided up the guitar tracks between us, while house did most of everything else. Our plan is to release a 30 minute megamedley of the entire game's soundtrack. We have the song order all figured out. That's why this was called "Movement 1", although it wasn't intended to be made into movements. We just didn't finish in time for DoD.

Loungin' in the Giant Game: Final Fantasy IV
Composer: Nobuo Uematsu
Completed: Work-In-Progress (DoD release: March 2005)

Download (5:15, 7.26mB)

Comments: This was my March DoD entry. It's an arrangement of "Within the Giant." I first came up with the arrangement for this in July of 2004, when I first started using Reason. I was listening to "Summer Madness" by Kool and the Gang, so I got inspired to make this arrangement. This is one of my favorite game songs, as this is my 3rd attempt at arranging it.

This is a bit different from my normal style. I was going for a hip, fusion sound. It's been several months since I recorded this and released it on DoD. I've wanted to wait on releasing the real thing because I wanted to get more familiar with using Cubase (this was my first recording in Cubase).

NinjascapeGame: Ninja Gaiden II
Composer: Shitamachi Kajiya, Mayu
Completed: January 2005

Download (4:41, 4.89mB)

Comments: Just a hard rock cover of "The Parasprinter". This is the remastered version that I released on VGMix. The mixing on the DoD version was awful, but still got 1st. I'd say this is my first decently produced song.

Zealous Entropy Game: Chrono Trigger
Composer: Yasunori Mitsuda
Completed: August 2004

Download (10:29, 9.9mB)

Comments: This is by far my highest acclaimed arrangement, of "Corridors of Time". I remember getting inspiration from part 6 the album, A Pleasant Shade of Grey, by Fates Warning when dinking around in Reason. I had been working on a remastered version in late 2005, but I want to work on my production skills a bit more before releasing that.

A special thanks goes to Ryan8bit, Bethampetamine, housethegrate, and Norrin Radd for the quote vocal tracks. The quotes were of townspeople in the Kingdom of Zeal. The first quote that appears in the song by Ryan8bit is from a book in Zeal. And thanks to everyone for the great response to this song

Eye of the TigerGame: Street Fighter II
Composer: Yoshihiro Sakaguchi, Yoko Shimomura, Tetsuya Nishimura, Isao Abe
Completed: Incomplete (VGMix release: August 2004)

Download (2:56, 2.9mB)

Comments: This is an arrangement I will never finish, because it's so dated, I was learning how to use Reason and Drums From Hell, Vegas, and it's just a cover looped 4 times with a couple different solos. Here's what I said at VGMix:

Well, I wanted to leave something I did for people to listen to while I go on my trip to Sweden. I'll be there for a couple weeks.

This is something I've been working on For a month or so on and off. Really all I need to do is record two more solos, and write one of them, work on the mixing a bit, add the room-mic samples for all the drum hits, tweak the reverb a bit on the guitars, compress the bass a bit more, maybe use a different sample for the strings, re-record a few guitar parts, and then EQ the final mix.

The sequenced tracks, drums and strings, were done in Reason. The drum samples are Drums From Hell, and the strings are off a crappy soundfont from HammerSound (I need to use Reason's factory samples). The bass was recorded with a Line6 bass POD, the guitar was recorded with a Boss GT-6, and the multitracking program used for recording is Vegas 4.0. I also used Waves plugins for effects.

Lots of time for feedback while I'm gone. Thanks.

Final Mission Game: Final Mission
Composer: Kyouhei Sada
Completed: July 2004

Download (3:21, 4.5mB)

Comments: This was a collaboration I did with Shawn Phase for his album, Now You're Playing With Power 4 , as a hidden track. I did all of the guitar tracks. This was around the time I was hurtin' BAD to get that Jarzombek tone...

Red Cap Assault Game: Final Fantasy Mystic Quest
Composer: Ryuji Sasai, Yasuhiro Kawakami
Completed: July 2004

Download (3:14, 3.68mB)

Comments: I just cut the battle section out of my FFMQ medley because it was the only thing from it that I wanted to release at VGMix. This was also my first release at VGMix since I got in that feud with Chaos and left in July 2003. Here's what I said there:

It's the battle theme from Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. This was ranked 2nd place in last month's Dwelling of Duels. The production quality on it is pretty sub-par in comparison to what I've learned after recording it (with much thanks to Ailsean :) ). Pretty muddy. The samples were sequenced in Fruity Loops and the guitar and bass were recorded in Cool Edit Pro with a GT-6 FX processor, And Line6 Bass POD.

Due to the fact that Cool Edit Pro is teh worst multitracking program on the face of the earth, this is all I could squeeze out without CEP crashing everytime I tried to make a change :(

Thought you might get a kick out it. Thanks for listening, enjoy.
FFMQ MedleyGame: Final Fantasy Mystic Quest
Composer: Ryuji Sasai, Yasuhiro Kawakami
Completed: June 2004

Comments: Man, did I have a pain with this one...It was my entry for the May-June 2004 DoD free month. My original intention was to do all of the songs in this medley here, plus the other two battle themes from the soundtrack.

I had something like 90-100 tracks in my Cool Edit Pro session, which inevitably led to CEP crashing every time I tried to export it. I had to manually use Total Recorder to record sections of the wave file that weren't corrupt. It was awful.

There were so many tracks because I overdubbed every track 6 times and panned it around the stereo field. This technique inspired me to write my rhythm guitar tutorial. Anyway, the CEP session got messed up and that's why I never finished this.
B-WingGame: B-Wing
Composer: ?
Completed: May 2004

Comments: I have no idea, but the production on this one just came out AWFUL (sorry Shawn). Shawn Phase wanted my bro and I to record the guitar and bass tracks for a cover that appeared on Now You're Playing With Power 3.
AquariusGame: Castlevania III
Composer: Yoshinori Sasaki, Jun Funahashi, Y. Morimoto
Completed: April 2004

Comments: It's nothing special -- just a straight cover of "Aquarius" from Castlevania 3.

Stage 2 Game: Bad Dudes
Composer: Saki, Miura, Suzuki, Takahama
Completed: April 2004

Download (2:30, 3.44mB)

Comments: Just a cover of Stage 2 from Bad Dudes. I hope the majority of your attention is directed to the picture above.

Killer Instinct Medley Game: Killer Instinct
Composer: Robin Beanland, Graeme Norgate
Completed: February 2004

Download (8:44, 12.8mB)

Comments: There's a funny story that goes along with this one. After submitting my first DoD in February, I decided to make an entry for the next month, which would be the Fighting Games month. I recorded this all in Sony Acid, and it was the first recording I did on a computer with decent production. This would have been DoD's first megamedley.

As for the funny story...I was checking the Shizz one day as normal, and I look to find a thread posted for March's duel. I had completely forgotten about the deadline, and didn't submit. So I never finished this, like recording a guitar solo for the intro theme. I think it's worth a listen though.

Red Wings Game: Final Fantasy IV
Composer: Nobuo Uematsu
Completed: February 2004

Comments: Nothing special.
Pain the Universe Game: Legend of Mana
Composer: Yoko Shimomura
Completed: Incomplete (February 2004)

Comments: Incomplete cover of the boss theme from LoM. Not worth the listen.
RallyGame: Fire Emblem
Composer: ?
Completed: February 2004

Comments: A cover of the "Rally" theme from Fire Emblem. Great song, bad cover. Nothing special.

Illusionary World Game: Final Fantasy IV
Composer: Nobuo Uematsu
Completed: Incomplete (February 2004)

Download (2:59, 2.78mB)

Comments: I started working on a cover of this, but didn't finish cause I didn't like how it was turning out.

Boomer Kuwanger Game: Mega Man X
Composer: Setsuo, Tomozou, Sato, Yuko, Kirry
Completed: January 2004

Download (2:32, 2.32mB)

Comments: This was my first entry for the fourth ever DoD. It was also the first recording I ever did on a computer, which was my new computer. It was also the second cover I've done with a guitar solo in it.

OnettGame: EarthBound
Composer: Keiichi Suzuki, Hirokazu Tanaka, Akio Ohmori, Ritsuo Kamimura
Completed: October 2003

Download (2:08, 1.95mB)

Comments: This is just a simple, straight-forward cover of the Onett theme from EarthBound. Was supposed to do another arrangement of this for "Bound Together", but didn't get around to it. This one's worth the listen.

Dwelling of Doom Game: Castlevania II
Composer: ?
Completed: September 2003

Download (1:21, 3.09mB)

Comments: Oh, boy. This was made for Crimson's contest, "The Dwelling of Duels." The competition was made in response to some jackass on the Minibosses' message board named Slayer, who insisted that he was the greatest guitarist on the board and everyone sucked.

Even though I finished my entry, I decided not to submit it since all I would recieve would be ridicule from Slayer. Of course since I didn't enter, he didn't either. That left Crimson with only two entrants after he changed the theme to a general shred competiton, where only he and radne entered.

Anyway, this was my first VG cover with a guitar solo it. It really sucks. It's just improvised, really sloppy, and almost like 2 minutes long. That's why the version up here has it cut out.
Dr. Wily Stage 1 Game: Mega Man II
Composer: Ogeretsu Kun, Manami Ietel, Yoshihiro Sakaguchi
Completed: September 2003

Comments: Nothing special.

Battle 3 Game: Lufia II
Composer: Yasunori Shiono
Completed: Incomplete (September 2003)

Comments: My old buddy nietslaf recommended I do this song. Hey, I knew it could rock, so this is what came out. It was mostly done, but never considered finished.

Giott, the Great KingGame: Final Fantasy IV
Composer: Nobuo Uematsu
Completed: September 2003

Comments: Nothing special.

Hey, Cid! Game: Final Fantasy IV
Composer: Nobuo Uematsu
Completed: September 2003

Comments: A decent, simple cover. Uses all clean guitar.

Battle Theme Game: Final Fantasy IV
Composer: Nobuo Uematsu
Completed: September 2003

Comments: This one came out decent. Rockin' just like the original.

SnafuGame: Snafu
Composer: ?
Completed: August 2003

Download (1:25, 1.82mB)

Comments: I used to play Snafu on Intellivision with a buddy a mine. The little melody is so catchy....I had to record a cover of it!
Bloody Tears Game: Castlevania II
Composer: James Banana
Completed: August 2003

Comments: This is an "acoustic" guitar arrangement (I used clean tones) of Bloody Tears from CV2. I never released this anywhere.

Morning Sunlight Game: Chrono Trigger
Composer: Yasunori Mitsuda, Nobuo Uematsu, Noriko Matsueda
Completed: August 2003

Download (0:41, 644kB)

Comments: I made this short little cover for a flash movie called Mega Kain 2, which was made by me and Crimson.
Within the Giant Game: Final Fantasy IV
Composer: Nobuo Uematsu
Completed: August 2003

Comments: I tried making a metal arrangement out of "Within the Giant" with fast drums, really obnoxious chorusy distorted guitar tones, and a boring arrangement. Ugh, I've always loathed this piece of crap.

Dancing Mad 4.2 Game: Final Fantasy VI
Composer: Nobuo Uematsu
Completed: August 2003

Comments: I spent the entire day programming the drums for this one, but the song's quality couldn't cut it in the end. This was a bit more than half-way done.

TechnodromeGame: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2
Composer: Keizou Nakamura
Completed: July 2003

Download (1:42, 1.56mB)
(housethegrate.com mirror - thanks)

Comments: This is a collaboration between me, housethegrate, and Shawn Phase, under the name of "Sidescroller". house and I split up the guitar tracks 50/50, he did the bass, and Shawn played the drums. This was the first VG cover collaboration that I can recall of.
Lufia Medley Game: Lufia
Composer: Yasunori Shiono
Completed: July 2003

Comments: Back in the day before DoD, Ryan8bit had a project called the VGCD, which would just be a full length CD comprised of covers by people in the scene. But hardly anyone was dedicated, so the project died. I finished this crazy 13-14 minute Lufia medley in a weekend.

MagusGame: Chrono Trigger
Composer: Yasunori Mitsuda, Nobuo Uematsu, Noriko Matsueda
Completed: August 2003

Download (2:32, 2.33mB)

Comments: This was my first decent attempt at a VG cover. A lot of people first heard of me from this. It was the first thing I posted on the pre-VGMix2.0 forums in July 2003.
Undersea Palace Game: Chrono Trigger
Composer: Yasunori Mitsuda, Nobuo Uematsu, Noriko Matsueda
Completed: Early 2003

Comments: Nothing special. 8-track era.
Corridors of Time Game: Chrono Trigger
Composer: Yasunori Mitsuda, Nobuo Uematsu, Noriko Matsueda
Completed: Early 2003

Comments: Nothing special. 8-track era.
Mega Man 3 Medley Game: Mega Man 3
Composer: Yasuaki Fujita
Completed: April 2003

Comments: This is one of my old covers that I'm not hugely embarrassed of. I made it in a couple days. This was back when I thought medleys could be songs back to back with a pause between. :)

Metal Man Game: Mega Man II
Composer: Ogeretsu Kun, Manami Ietel, Yoshihiro Sakaguchi
Completed: March 2003

Comments: I saw a song request thread on the Minibosses message board, and a lot of people requested Metal Man from MM2, so I decided to make a cover of it as an introduction of myself. It sucks.

Frog's Theme Game: Chrono Trigger
Composer: Yasunori Mitsuda, Nobuo Uematsu, Noriko Matsueda
Completed: Incomplete (September 2002)

Comments: Bad cover with a bad tone. And it's not even done! I think you can guess this one's not for download...

This was my first ever VG cover. The idea intrigued me, so I used my old n00b method of learning and recording as a straight cover: program drums on drum machine, learn the MIDI tracks on guitar, record all the parts, mix it, done. I also hardly even played guitar at this point.
